🏛️ City Heritage & History

Aransas Pass, Texas got its name from the unique geologic feature that attracted settlers to this coastal haven in 1909. This navigable saltwater channel connecting the Gulf of Mexico with Aransas Bay is flanked by Mustang Island and San José Island, each protected by jetties. The pass's strategic location became a center for shipbuilding and commerce during the early 20th century as commercial fishing expanded along the Texas coast.

At the eastern terminus of the pass, the town of Port Aransas emerged on Mustang Island, becoming a thriving port city. At the western end, the mainland community of Aransas Pass prospered by enabling maritime trade connections between Bay and Gulf. Today, the free ferry service linking the two towns reflects their intertwined history and shared resource.

Surrounded by protected shorelines, pristine bays, and Gulf fishing grounds, the people of these twin port cities have long lived sustainably. This heritage continues in their local culture today.
