Art, TX, a quaint unincorporated community nestled in Mason County, has a fascinating history that traces back to 1856 when five German families established homesteads along Upper Willow Creek. The area was initially known as Willow Creek but later renamed Art on December 23, 1920, by postmaster Eli Dechart, drawing inspiration from the last three letters of his name. Throughout its humble existence, Art has remained a small, primarily ranching community with a tight-knit population that reached an estimated 18 residents in 2016.

Despite facing numerous Indian raids in its early days, the log Methodist church building built in 1858 offered both spiritual solace and education, serving dual purposes until it was replaced by a stone structure in 1875. The establishment of J.A. Hoerster's general store in 1883 further solidified Art's presence on the map, followed by Otto Plehwe purchasing and renaming the community Plehweville. However, mail confusion led to Eli Dechart's renaming initiative that now holds the town's official name.

Today, Art continues to thrive as a sparsely populated, widely dispersed community with a functioning post office, encapsulating its rich history while staying true to the spirit of rural Texas charm.
