Nestled in Hill County, Aquilla, Texas takes its name from an early settler named Aquilla Jones. The town originated as Mudtown, when settlers were drawn to the area for its abundant timber resources in the 1840s. Aquilla Creek and the nearby community were likely named after this pioneering figure who played a significant role in the region's development at its conception.

The village grew with the establishment of a post office in 1859 and saw significant expansion in 1870 when the Texas Central Railroad built tracks through southwestern Hill County, just a few miles away from Aquilla's timber settlement. As businesses and residents moved south to follow the rail line, Mudtown relocated as well, evolving into what it is today.

During its peak in the early 20th century, Aquilla boasted a population exceeding 500 residents and a bustling economy that supported numerous retail stores, hotels, churches, schools, newspapers, banks, and a thriving lumber company. A defining moment came in 1897 when a well was dug to address health concerns resulting from drinking creek water.

Today, this small town continues to maintain its distinct heritage, preserving key landmarks and stories of Aquilla Jones and other historic figures that contributed to the fabric of life while living around Aquilla Creek and amidst its hills and forests. With a population numbering slightly over 100 people today, the sense of community in Aquilla remains strong, echoing the qualities seen during its heyday a century ago.
