🏛️ City Heritage & History

Nestled along the rolling hills of northeastern Texas, Avery is a charming town with a rich history dating back to the 1870s. Originally named Douglass, this small gem on U.S. Highway 82 has undergone several name changes throughout its storied past. In honor of Ed Avery, the town's first railway station agent, residents decided to change the town's moniker to Avery in 1902.

In the early days, the tiny settlement consisted mostly of families living in tents, as the surrounding area was quite sparsely populated. However, by the turn of the century, Avery had blossomed into a thriving community with three churches and a school, while its population steadily increased from an estimated thirty to 176 residents.

The heart of Arlington's economy has always been agriculture, particularly cotton ginning during the early 1900s. But it was in the 1920s that Avery truly made history by becoming one of the largest tomato-producing and shipping cities in northeastern Texas. This vibrant industry stayed strong until the early 1960s, helping to shape the unique character of this quaint town.

Today, Avery stands proud with a population of 421, maintaining the essence of its heritage while embracing modernity. With a deep-rooted connection to farming and an unwavering spirit that echoes through its streets, Avery remains a fascinating piece of Texas history waiting to be discovered by those seeking a slice of rural charm in this ever-changing world.
